Don’t Have a Composting Facility?
If you don’t live in an area with a composting facility, ask for one! Contact your City Hall, state legislature, civic league or local waste management facility. You can use the sample letter, or put your own personal spin on it. Heck, you can even start a petition at Change.org.
Sample Letter
Dear (City Council) (State Legislator) (Fellow Citizen) (Other__________)
Food is the single largest source of waste in the U.S., accounting for 20% of what goes into our municipal landfills. Once there, it breaks down anaerobically and produces methane, a greenhouse gas 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Just one ton of food generates 3.8 tons of methane gas.
The impact on our environment is staggering. But we can do something about it by starting a curbside composting program in our city like those in Minneapolis and San Francisco.
The resulting compost would help pay for the program, by allowing our area to use compost in place of expensive chemical fertilizers, as well as selling compost to farms and citizens.
I urge you to support a curbside composting program in our area. It’s the right solution to our food waste problem.
Sincerely,
[Your name]
